Tracing a drop of blood through the heart

Left
atrium

you enter my heart
like a comet striking atmosphere
bright hot, pulsing,
with all that you’ve just seen.

Left
ventricle

never standing still
for a single moment
rushing out as quickly
as you entered

Circulatory
system

bringing life
to my dying cells,
screaming out for
your touch,

Right
Atrium

then rushing back up,
my head swimming
with the intoxicating
breath of–

Right
Ventricle

falling into
your arms at night.
home at last, I
feel my exhausted
strength renew. Because–

Pulmonary
System

you are like oxygen
filling my lungs
saving my life
fueling my thoughts
turning my darkest moments–

red.

I wrote this poem in 2017 for Gateway’s Voices. It won first place in the poetry category. I was in EMT class at the time and tracing a drop of blood through the heart is an exercise we often did in class to make sure we understood the method by which profusion took place.
